SDG Indicator 6.4.2
Indicator 6.4.2 - Level of water stress: freshwater withdrawal as a proportion of available freshwater resources.
Per the United Nations descriptions of the SDG goals, Target 6.4 states, "By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity."
Data for Indicator 6.4.2 comes from the San Diego County Water Authority. The data reflects the change in water-use over time. Water use is defined as total water consumed/used in acre-feet, including residential, commercial and industrial, agricultural, public and other from 2015 to 2021.
The graph below shows the change in sources of freshwater by year for the region. There has been a significant increase in the percentage of the region's water coming from the Imperial Irrigation District (from 19 to 31 percent), and from seawater desalinization, which was less than 1% in 2015 but now makes up 8% of the region's freshwater.
In contrast, during that time the proportion of the region's water coming from the Metropolitan Water District has decreased by 39 percent, from 57% in 2015 to 18% in 2020.
