About This Dashboard

The Traffic Safety Dashboard provides traffic collision data for the San Diego region. SANDAG uses these data to support project development and planning efforts, including Vision Zero, a worldwide initiative to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries.
The dashboard was developed with input from city, county, and other transportation safety staff across the San Diego region. This effort is a key step in implementing the Regional Vision Zero Resolution adopted by the SANDAG Board of Directors on July 22, 2022.

In this Report

The data are presented in seven main sections:
  • Overview
  • Regional Map
  • Pedestrians & Bicyclists
  • Demographics
  • Transit & Rail

About the Data

Any traffic collision where an officer responds and completes a collision report in the San Diego region is included in these data. California Highway Patrol (CHP) compiles collision reports from all law enforcement agencies into the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). SANDAG downloads, reviews, and builds upon the collision data from SWITRS for the San Diego region. Data from 2021 and earlier are considered final by SWITRS and not subject to change. Data for 2022 are preliminary and may change.
Data on transit and rail incidents are gathered from the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Major Safety Events and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Rail Equipment Accident/Incident Data.
For assistance using the dashboard, see the 'How to Use This Dashboard' section near the bottom of this page.

Overview

The 'Overview’ section provides data on the number of traffic collisions and the primary factor that caused the collisions in the San Diego region.
  • Collisions by Year indicate the total number of collisions per year. In 2021, over 24,000 collisions were reported.
  • Primary Collision Factor (PCF) lists the main cause or causes of collisions (e.g., improper turning, pedestrian violation, unsafe speed) as determined by the investigating officer. In 2021, there were a reported total of 315 fatalities, with 102 pedestrian fatalities and 17 bicyclist fatalities. Seventy-four (74) pedestrian fatalities were caused by ‘pedestrian violation’ and 8 bicyclist fatalities were caused by ‘improper turning’ of the vehicle.

Regional Map

The 'Regional Map’ section shows the location where all collisions occurred throughout the San Diego region from 2011 to 2022. The number of collisions are represented by circular clusters. The larger the cluster, the higher the number of collisions. In 2021, collisions resulting in a fatality and/or severe injury were more concentrated within central San Diego and East County.

Pedestrians & Bicyclists

The 'Pedestrians’ and ‘Bicyclists’ sections provide information on the number of traffic collisions in the San Diego region involving either pedestrians or bicyclists with a vehicle, where they occurred, their primary collision factor, and either the pedestrian’s action at the time of the collision or the type of collision involving bicyclists.
  • Collisions Involving Pedestrians by Year indicate the number of collisions involving pedestrians per year. Similarly, Collisions Involving Bicyclists by Year indicates the number of collisions involving bicyclists per year. In 2021, there were a reported total of 957 collisions involving pedestrians and 763 collisions involving bicyclists.
  • The Collision Severity Maps in both sections show the location where collisions involving either pedestrians or bicyclists occurred. In 2021, the locations of collisions involving pedestrians was more concentrated within central San Diego, while the locations of collisions involving bicyclists were spread throughout the region and along the coast.
  • Primary Collision Factor in both sections lists primary factors that caused collisions (e.g., pedestrian violation, pedestrian right-of-way, improper turning) resulting in pedestrian or bicyclist injuries or fatalities.
    • Out of 957 collisions involving pedestrians in 2021, there were 872 pedestrians injured and 102 pedestrian fatalities. ‘Pedestrian right-of-way,’ such as a car failing to yield, was a common factor and caused 238 pedestrian injuries. ‘Improper turning’ of a vehicle resulted in 6 pedestrian fatalities.
    • Out of the 763 collisions involving bicyclists in 2021, there were 725 bicyclists injured and 17 fatalities. 146 of the bicyclists injured were caused by ‘improper turning’ of the vehicle and one of the bicyclist fatalities was caused by “unsafe speed” of the vehicle.
  • Pedestrian Action indicates what the pedestrian was doing at the time of the collision (e.g., crossing in a crosswalk at an intersection, crossing not in a crosswalk, in the road or shoulder). In 2021, 335 of the collisions involved a pedestrian crossing in a crosswalk at an intersection when the collision occurred.
  • Type of Collision indicates the number of collisions involving bicyclists that were designated as either of the following types: broadside, head-on, hit object, not stated, other, overturned, rear end, sideswipe, or vehicle/pedestrian. In 2021, 249 of the collisions involving bicyclists were broadside, or T-boned, collisions.

Demographics

The ‘Demographics’ section provides information on the number of traffic collisions, where they occurred, and the race, age, and degree of injury of all individuals involved in the collisions.
  • Collisions by Year indicates the number of collisions per year.
  • The Collision Severity Map shows the location where collisions occurred.
  • Age of Party indicates the age of all individuals involved in the given number of collisions. In 2021, the majority of individuals involved in collisions were in their twenties. Out of the 24,016 collisions, there were 1,175 individuals who were twenty-one years old and 1,173 individuals who were twenty years old when the collision occurred.
  • Degree of Injury indicates the number and severity of injuries that were sustained in the given number of collisions. In 2021, the total of 24,016 collisions resulted in 10,676 individuals complaining of pain and 5,943 individuals with a possible injury.

Transit & Rail

The ‘Transit’ and ‘Rail’ section provide information on the number of either transit or rail incidents that have occurred within the San Diego region, incident location, incident type, and either the transit vehicles’ action at the time of the incident or the primary cause of rail incidents.
  • Transit Incidents by Year indicates the number of incidents involving transit – bus, commuter bus, demand-responsive transit, hybrid rail (i.e., SPRINTER), and light rail (i.e., Trolley) per year. In 2021, 76 transit incidents were reported.
  • Rail Incidents by Year indicates the number of incidents involving heavy rail (e.g., COASTER, Amtrak) per year. In 2021, 2 (two) rail incidents were reported.
  • The Transit Incidents Map shows the location where incidents involving transit occurred.
  • The Rail Incidents Map shows the location where heavy rail incidents occurred.
  • Incident Type In 2021, 41 of the transit incidents were designated as a ‘non-rail collision’ which is typically a bus or other on-road vehicle.
  • Vehicle Action indicates the transit vehicle’s action at the time of the incident (e.g., going straight, stopped, leaving a stop). The most common transit vehicle action is ‘going straight’ followed by ‘stopped.’
  • Primary Incident Cause indicates the primary factor that caused the incident.
  • Total Damage Cost indicates the damage caused by rail incidents in U.S. Dollars. In 2021, the total two (2) rail incidents resulted in $126,000 in damage.

How to Use This Dashboard

Each section of the Traffic Safety Dashboard includes interactive charts, tables, maps, and filters. When exploring each section, the number of collisions, the number of individuals injured, and the number of fatalities based on the selected filter(s) are displayed in either the top-left corner or center. The filters are located on either the top or left-hand side.
  • All figures (maps, tables, and graphs) are dynamic and can be filtered. To select a filter, click on either the check box or button of the filter you want to select, and it will go from light (un-selected) to dark (selected). You can make individual or multiple selections within a single filter, or across several filters.
  • To de-select a filter, click on the check box of the filter you want to de-select, and it will go from dark (selected) to light (un-selected).
  • If you click on a feature of a figure, it will be highlighted, and the other figures will respond by highlighting the data that pertains to the selected feature. To escape a selection, click on the original selected feature and it will be unhighlighted.
  • Hover your cursor over a figure to view additional details.
