SDG Indicator 9.1.2

Data for Indicator 9.1.2 depicts the number of inbound vehicle, container, passenger, and pedestrian crossings into the United States through the Otay Mesa, Tecate, and San Ysidro ports of entry (POEs).

The graph below illustrates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on border traffic. Total crossings at all three reported POEs dropped by 24% between January 2020 and April 2020 after the U.S. government imposed travel restrictions in response to the pandemic. Since travel restrictions were lifted, border traffic at these POEs has increased, but hasn't yet risen to match pre-COVID volumes.

The map below shows the total traffic at the San Ysidro, Tecate, and Otay Mesa POEs. Zoom in on a POE to explore the distribution of transportation types across the reported timeframe (January 2015 – October 2022).

Data for Indicator 9.1.2 comes from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) within the U.S. Department of Transportation. BTS Border Crossing/Entry Data provides summary statistics for inbound crossings by truck, train, container, bus, personal vehicle, and foot at the U.S.-Canadian and the U.S.-Mexican border POEs. Border crossing data is collected by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
