SDG Indicator 17.6.1

Indicator 17.6.1 - Access to adequate internet service
Data for Indicator 17.6.1 illustrates San Diego County's access to broadband that meets California’s speed standards of 100 megabits per second (mbps) download and 20 mbps upload.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires broadband providers to file Form 477: Local Telephone Competition and Broadband Reporting twice each year. This form collects information about wired and wireless broadband connections, including locations where service speeds exceed 200 kilobits per second (kbps) in at least one direction. Data from Form 477 is used to highlight key areas of need and competition in broadband deployment and infrastructure.
Analyses for this Indicator are based on census blocks from 2010 and have not yet been updated to reflect the 2020 census blocks. Percentages were therefore determined using the 2010 population, as 2020 population data is not available for 2010 census blocks.

Location of slow download speeds

Internet service providers offer broadband connections with download speeds of at least 100 mbps in 97% of census blocks, which contain 99% of the regional population.

Location of slow upload speeds

Providers offer connections with download speeds of at least 20 mbps in 88% of census blocks, which contain 96% of the regional population.

Data for Indicator 17.6.1 comes from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
