Data for Indicator 17.13.1 illustrates the overall economic health of the San Diego region.
The cards and chart below show that unemployment in the region had been declining between 2015 and 2019 but increased in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Data for this Indicator comes from multiple sources. GDP statistics are reported by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports statistics for consumer price index (CPI) adjustments, unemployment rate, and job count. Housing inventory statistics come from the SANDAG Data Surfer annual demographic and socioeconomic estimates for 2016-2020.
Analogous to the unemployment rate, the job count in the region had been increasing since 2015 but decreased in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The region has seen a steady increase in housing inventory since 2016, as shown in the graph below.
The regional gross domestic product (GDP) experienced a similar pattern as the job count: a steady increase between 2016 and 2019 with a sharp decline in 2020.
